Overview of Trincomalee Town & Gravets Divisional Secretariat
The Trincomalee Town & Gravets division is geographically divided into two regions: the Trincomalee Urban Council area and the Trincomalee Town & Gravets Pradeshiya Sabha area.
The extent of the division is 148 Sq. Km and consists of 42 Grama Niladhari divisions. One of the largest natural harbours in the world — the Trincomalee Harbour — lies at the centre, making it the most significant feature of this region.
Trincomalee, located on the North-East coast of Sri Lanka 257 km from Colombo, is renowned for its sandy beaches, natural creeks ideal for swimming, as well as opportunities for diving and fishing.
The famous Swami Rock, a towering 122-meter headland, once hosted an ancient Hindu temple of 1,000 columns. The temple was destroyed in 1622, and its remnants now lie beneath the sea. Fort Frederick, Dutch Point, Ostenberg Point, and Wellington House are other notable landmarks.
The Prima flour mill and the Mitsui cement factory at Chinabay — both with significant port facilities — are key industrial establishments.
The Trincomalee Naval Base, the Air Force Base at Chinabay, and the Army’s 22 Division HQ at Plantain Point are major security establishments located in the division.
Fishing is the main occupation of most residents, however, expansion has been limited due to security concerns in past years. Agriculture is the second major livelihood, which has also faced setbacks in recent times.
